by Alun Ward & "Bronenosets Potyomkin"
[Battleship Potemkin]
Sunday, October 1
4.30 pm
Come and see the movie at the Phoenix Cinema Oxford, then
go upstairs to the bar to view the pictures by Alun Ward.

Still from the famous Odessa steps scene.
The exhibition of drawings entitled "Peter Schlemihl's Bargain
with Satan" shows work which was inspired initially by the story
of Peter Schlemihl and his shadow. In the nineteenth century story by
Adalbert von Chamisso, Schlemihl sold his shadow
to the devil in exchange for gold. Paul Wegener made a movie of the story
in 1915, before his more famous film "Golem." These drawings
are also suggestive of film stills from this early silent era.
